Film labels in cold environments: the challenge goes beyond low temperature
Frozen food businesses, seafood exporters, and cold chain suppliers face a daunting challenge: cold-resistant film labels must maintain adhesion, color integrity, and legible information throughout the entire journey — from the -18°C blast freezer to retail refrigerated displays, and finally to home refrigerators. Each time a product moves across different temperature zones, condensation occurs, leaving packaging surfaces wet and labels exposed to moisture. That is precisely when edge lifting, ink smearing, and wrinkling begin to surface.
The key differentiator for frozen food labels is whether labeling happens before or after freezing. If applied before freezing, the label must withstand material shrinkage at -18°C without cracking or breaking. If applied after freezing, the product surface is already cold and may have condensation; the adhesive must have sufficient tack to bond immediately in low-temperature, high-humidity conditions. Water-resistant labels for cold environments typically use white or clear BOPP film, ranging from 50 to 80 microns in thickness. BOPP offers excellent dimensional stability under temperature fluctuations, without the shrinkage seen in certain low-cost PVC films. For deep-freeze applications below -25°C, PET film is recommended for its superior mechanical strength and robust impact resistance during frozen pallet stacking. Another critical factor is the protective laminate layer — without an overlaminate, printed ink is susceptible to scratching when frozen packages rub against one another.
The adhesive is the decisive factor for cold-resistant plastic self-adhesive labels. Freezer-grade adhesive must maintain tack at sub-zero temperatures without hardening or losing adhesion like standard acrylic adhesive. Before mass production, Hirich recommends that customers perform three tests with cold-resistant film labels: a 24-hour ice water submersion test to check for edge lifting, a thermal shock test cycling from -18°C to room temperature repeated 3 times to verify stability, and a wet abrasion test to assess ink and lamination durability.
