Mono-material packaging and labels: don’t let the label ruin recyclability

Mono-material packaging — packaging made from a single type of material (100% PE, 100% PP, or 100% PET) — is becoming the new design standard for sustainable packaging. The principle is simple: the fewer material types a package contains, the easier it is to recycle. A pouch made from 100% PE can be recycled with the PE stream without needing layer separation. But there’s a commonly overlooked pitfall: the label on mono-material packaging. If a PE pouch is labeled with a PP or paper label, the combination is no longer mono-material. The label has compromised the entire recyclable design of the packaging.

Principles for Choosing Labels for Mono-Material Packaging

Core principle: labels must be made from the same material family as the primary packaging. Specifically: PE packaging → PE labels; PP packaging → PP labels; PET packaging → PET labels. In addition, inks and coatings must also be compatible with the recycling stream of the primary material. Water-based inks are preferred over UV inks because they do not generate insoluble ink particles during the mechanical recycling process.

Adhesive also plays a decisive role. Traditional permanent adhesives do not separate from packaging during the recycling process, creating adhesive particles (stickies) that reduce the quality of recycled materials. Wash-off adhesives or adhesives that dissolve during industrial washing processes are a superior choice. Some material manufacturers have developed ‘recycling-compatible’ adhesives, designed to cause no interference in the mechanical recycling streams of PE and PP.

Benefits and Challenges of Mono-Material Packaging with Synchronized Labels

The clearest benefit: maximizing recyclability while meeting the increasingly stringent Design for Recycling standards from Europe (RecyClass, APR). In addition, mono-material packaging with synchronized labels streamlines the supply chain—businesses work with just one material family, reducing complexity in inventory management and quality control.

The main challenge: not all label materials are available in mono-material form. PE labels for PE packaging may come at a higher cost and offer fewer surface options than conventional PP labels. Additionally, the performance of mono-material labels under certain harsh conditions (low temperature, high humidity, chemical exposure) must be thoroughly tested before making the switch. Hirich advises businesses to conduct a comprehensive evaluation: from selecting compatible label materials and testing performance under real-world conditions, to confirming recyclability with local recycling facilities—ensuring that mono-material packaging is genuinely recycled, not merely “recyclable in theory.”
