Linerless Labels: Reducing Label Backing Waste in Logistics and Retail

Linerless labels: the complete solution to label backing waste

Each year, the global label printing industry generates millions of tons of silicone liner waste — the backing layer that is peeled off and discarded after label application. These liners, made from siliconized glassine or kraft paper, are nearly impossible to recycle through conventional channels because the silicone coating does not break down and clogs pulping equipment. Linerless labels eliminate this backing layer entirely, reducing material weight by up to 40% compared to traditional labels and completely eradicating the liner waste stream — one of the largest sources of industrial waste in the packaging industry.

Structure of linerless labels: instead of a silicone liner, the label’s top surface is coated with a release coating, while the bottom features an adhesive layer. When rolled up, the release coating on the outer wrap contacts the adhesive on the inner wrap, allowing each label to peel off effortlessly—no liner needed. The entire roll is usable product, with zero waste.

Applications of linerless labels in logistics and retail

In logistics, linerless labels are being adopted by major carriers such as DHL and UPS for shipping labels and pallet labels. The dual benefits: reduced warehouse waste and more labels per roll (since there is no liner, the same roll diameter can hold 40-50% more labels), resulting in fewer roll changes and less label printer downtime. For high-volume logistics environments, this is a significant improvement in both operational costs and sustainability profile.

In retail, linerless labels are used for electronic scale labels at fresh food counters, shelf price labels, and promotional labels. Their standout advantage is that labels can be cut to variable lengths based on content, without being constrained by the fixed sizes of backed labels—helping to save material when printing short information.

Challenges and Conditions for Applying Linerless Labels

Linerless labels are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Three key challenges: (1) Printers and applicators must be compatible—not every thermal printer or label applicator can handle linerless labels; (2) The exposed adhesive on the underside can pick up dust if warehouse conditions are not clean; (3) Current material costs are higher than traditional labels, although total cost of ownership (TCO) may be lower when factoring in liner waste disposal and increased roll-change efficiency. Hirich advises businesses to assess the feasibility of linerless labels based on existing equipment infrastructure, warehouse conditions, and overall cost calculations, helping determine whether this is the right sustainable transition at the present time.
