Labels for New Products: Pre-Launch Checklist

New Product Label Pre-Launch Checklist

Launching a new product is the most high-pressure moment for operations and marketing teams. Preparation of new product labels is often pushed to the end of the timeline and prone to errors. A clear checklist helps businesses avoid mistakes that cause delays or, worse, product recalls due to non-compliant labeling.

The first step is determining the number of SKUs and label variations. Each SKU requires a dedicated design file, even if they differ only in the fragrance line or packaging size. Next is verifying the mandatory information required by the target market’s regulations: ingredients, expiry date, batch code, barcode, and manufacturer or importer details. A single missing line of information can lead to an entire shipment being rejected at the port of entry or by distribution channels.

Material Selection and Adhesion Testing for New Product Labels

New products have no real-world usage history, so adhesion testing is mandatory. The label must be tested on the actual mass-production packaging, then placed in real storage conditions for at least seven days to check for edge peeling, blistering, color bleeding, or shrinkage. For cold-storage products, the full freeze-thaw cycle must also be tested to ensure the label does not peel off when transitioning from the freezer to room temperature.

Hirich minimizes material waste from the very first production run.

With new products, the risk of material waste is higher due to the lack of real-world data on how labels and packaging interact in mass production. Hirich solves this through an in-depth material consultation process: our technical team analyzes packaging surface characteristics, storage conditions, application line speed, and aesthetic requirements to recommend the optimal material–adhesive–finishing combination from the outset. Hirich also conducts application tests on the customer’s actual production line or simulates equivalent conditions before manufacturing, detecting early-stage issues such as labels not releasing at the correct position or adhesives incompatible with machine speed. All adjustments are carried out on small sample batches, maximizing savings in both materials and time.

Integrating promotional labels and VDP for launch campaigns

The launch date is also the perfect opportunity to leverage advertising labels featuring variable data—QR codes directing to landing pages, sweepstakes entry codes, or limited-edition messaging. These elements should be planned in tandem with the main label to ensure full alignment. The ideal timeframe for finalizing artwork is four to six weeks before launch, providing ample time for two rounds of sample approval and one revision cycle if necessary.
