Custom Label Printing: Strategic Label Selection for Every Industry

Custom label printing is not just about ordering a beautiful sticker design.

For many brands, labels are the first touchpoint between product and buyer. A well-designed label must do several jobs at once: establish brand recognition, convey required information, adhere securely to packaging, withstand the conditions of use, and perform consistently throughout production.

Therefore, when it comes to custom label printing, the question shouldn’t just be about size and price. The real question is: what industry does the product belong to, what surface will it be applied to, where will it be stored, are there legal or traceability requirements, and how long does the label need to uphold the brand image?

Why does each industry require a different label structure?

Cosmetic labels typically require a premium feel, resistance to water and oil, and lasting color in humid bathroom environments. Food labels demand clear information, durability in cold storage or refrigerated displays, and easy-to-scan barcodes. Pharmaceutical labels require precise data, batch codes, expiration dates, serialization, and anti-counterfeiting features. Chemical labels, meanwhile, must withstand solvents, acids, alkalis, friction—and carry unmistakable warnings.

If the same label material is used for every application, risks are highly likely to emerge: peeling edges, smeared ink, unreadable barcodes, off-brand colors, or insufficient space for legal information display.

Key Factors to Finalize Before Printing Labels

Before requesting a quote, businesses should prepare six categories of information: product type, application surface, storage environment, quantity, finishing requirements, and design files. For products with multiple SKUs, variable data such as barcodes, lot codes, QR codes, production dates, or market language should also be provided.

Label materials can be paper decal, BOPP film, PET, PP, clear label, silver label, or specialty materials. Adhesives can be permanent, removable, freezer-grade, or chemical-resistant. Printing technology can be flexo for consistent volume, digital for low quantities or high SKU counts, or hybrid when both speed and variable data are required.

Quick checklist before sending your request

  • What industry does the product belong to, and what surface will it be applied on?
  • Will the labels be exposed to water, oil, cold, heat, or chemicals?
  • Need roll labels for an applicator machine or sheet labels for manual application?
  • Do you have variable barcodes, QR codes, serial numbers, lot codes, or expiration dates?
  • Do you need premium finishing such as clear labels, silver labels, foil stamping, or protective coating?
  • Do you already have print-ready design files, die-lines, and bleed areas?

Choose labels based on actual usage conditions

A good label plan should start with the actual product: the packaging surface, storage temperature, shipping conditions, information requirements, and the brand image that needs to be maintained on the shelf. Once these factors are clearly defined, businesses can more easily select the right materials, the right adhesives, the right printing technology, and the right level of quality control—rather than simply comparing quotes on a per-label basis.
