Frozen food labels: the most demanding environment in the food industry

Among all food label segments, frozen food labels face the harshest conditions. Products are stored at deep subzero temperatures for extended periods, then moved through multiple stages: from cold storage to refrigerated trucks, into supermarket display cases, and finally into home freezers. Each transition exposes the product to thermal shock, condensation, and humidity fluctuations—factors that can destroy labels if they are not equipped with the right materials.

The four most common technical issues manufacturers face with frozen labels are: edge lifting and complete peeling when the adhesive loses its bonding strength at low temperatures; condensation and bubbling caused by moisture seeping between the adhesive layer and the packaging surface; ink smearing or smudging when the label surface comes into contact with melted ice water; and unreadable barcodes due to a foggy lamination layer or label surface deformation caused by temperature.

What’s noteworthy is that these defects often don’t appear immediately when labels are applied at the factory. They only surface after a few days or weeks in the cold supply chain, when the products are already on store shelves or, worse, in the hands of consumers. That’s why the pre-production testing process becomes a matter of survival.

How to Fix Bubbling and Peeling on Frozen Labels

The root cause of blistering on frozen food labels is the incompatibility between the thermal expansion coefficients of the label material and the packaging surface. When the product moves from -25°C to room temperature, the label and packaging expand at different rates, creating shear stress on the adhesive layer. If the adhesive is not flexible enough to absorb this stress, it will separate from the bonded surface, creating gaps for moisture to penetrate, resulting in air bubbles and peeling patches.

The film material is also carefully chosen to have a coefficient of expansion closely matching the packaging substrate, typically BOPP or PET with a moisture-resistant coating and a protective lamination layer against scratching. Choose the right film and lamination layer for each type of frozen packaging

For frozen zip bags, moisture-resistant labels need a matte or glossy lamination layer to prevent scratches when the bags rub against each other in the freezer. For frozen cartons, labels must adhere firmly to rough surfaces and withstand moisture from the carton during thawing. For frozen PET plastic trays, clear or silver labels create a premium effect while still ensuring barcodes remain scannable by supermarket scanners.
