FSC Labels: How Paper Certification Gives Your Brand a Competitive Edge

FSC Labels: Sustainable Forest Certification That Gives Your Brand a Competitive Edge

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international non-profit organization that sets standards for responsible forest management. An FSC label is produced from FSC-certified paper, meaning the paper materials come from forests managed under strict environmental, social, and economic standards: no overexploitation, protection of biodiversity, and respect for the rights of local communities and workers. For consumer brands, the FSC logo on labels is a transparent and trustworthy signal to consumers who are increasingly concerned about sustainability.

Unlike recycled paper, which can compromise print quality, FSC-certified paper delivers surface characteristics and print performance on par with conventional virgin paper. This means brands can achieve a credible sustainability signal without sacrificing the visual quality of their labels. For premium brands, where print quality is non-negotiable, FSC offers the most viable pathway to improving the sustainability profile of their packaging.

The Three Levels of FSC Certification and How to Display Them on Labels

FSC 100%: All paper materials come from FSC-certified forests. This is the highest level of certification and permits the display of the FSC logo with the label ‘100%’.

FSC Mix: Materials are a blend of paper from FSC-certified forests, recycled paper, and/or controlled wood. This is the most common level on the market. The FSC logo displays the ‘Mix’ label.

FSC Recycled: All materials are post-consumer recycled paper. The FSC logo displays the ‘Recycled’ line.

Important note: to display the FSC logo on products, the entire supply chain—from forest, paper mill, and printer to brand owner—must hold FSC Chain of Custody certification. Hirich is a label manufacturer certified with FSC CoC, enabling customers to legally use the FSC logo on their labels. Hirich’s certification code is printed on every batch of FSC labels to ensure full traceability.

When should your business invest in FSC labels?

FSC labels are most suitable when: (1) The brand has established or is building a sustainability positioning and needs documentation to substantiate it; (2) Products are exported to the EU market, where consumers and retailers require FSC certification as a condition for shelf placement; (3) The brand seeks to differentiate itself in the premium segment, where consumers are willing to pay more for environmentally responsible products. The additional cost of FSC-certified paper is typically only 5-15% compared to conventional paper—a modest investment relative to the brand value and consumer trust it delivers.
