Chemical Labels: When Durability Is a Safety Factor
In the industrial chemical industry, chemical labels are far more than simple product identification tools. They are essential safety components, providing hazard warnings, incident response instructions, and traceability data across the entire supply chain. A faded, peeling, or torn chemical label can lead to serious consequences: from chemical mix-ups in production to workplace accidents caused by missing warning information.
The usage environments for industrial chemicals are extremely harsh and diverse. Strong acids and alkalis can corrode label materials within minutes. Organic solvents such as acetone, toluene, and xylene can dissolve printed ink layers and adhesives. High temperatures inside factories, UV exposure outdoors, and friction during transportation and warehousing—all are factors that can destroy labels if the right materials are not selected from the very beginning.
GHS Standards and Warning Information Requirements
The GHS (Globally Harmonized System) is the mandatory international standard for GHS labels on chemical packaging. Each label must clearly display: the chemical name, hazard pictograms, signal words (Danger/Warning), hazard statements (H-phrases), precautionary statements (P-phrases), manufacturer information, and the CAS number. Pictograms must be printed with precise colors and compliant dimensions, and must not be distorted or faded throughout the product’s entire lifecycle.
To meet these requirements, chemical-resistant labels must be printed with specialized inks that offer resistance to solvents and UV radiation, applied onto durable substrates such as polyester (PET), vinyl (PVC), or polypropylene (BOPP). The protective overlaminate must also be chemically compatible with the intended use environment—a standard lamination can deteriorate rapidly when exposed to concentrated sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide.
Hirich Materials and Solutions for Chemical Labels
Hirich classifies chemical labeling requirements into three levels of severity. Level 1, household chemicals and mild detergents: utilizes white/silver BOPP film with permanent adhesive and gloss lamination, durable enough for warehouse and retail environments. Level 2, medium industrial chemicals: utilizes PET film with chemical-resistant adhesive, capable of withstanding oils, grease, mild alkalis, and transport friction. Level 3, highly corrosive chemicals and solvents: utilizes specialized polyester or vinyl with high-performance adhesive, combined with UV-cured ink and chemical-resistant lamination, ensuring labels do not degrade even when submerged in chemicals for extended periods.
For industrial labels used outdoors—such as drum labels and tank labels—Hirich recommends polyester materials with a UV-resistant coating to prevent yellowing and ink fading after prolonged sun exposure. For labels that must withstand high temperatures during production processes, polyimide is the top choice, offering heat resistance of up to 300°C.
