Labels for the Personal Care Industry: Oil, Water, and Curved Surfaces

Personal care labels: beautiful in the bathroom, durable for everyday use.

The personal care industry—including shampoo, body wash, facial cleansers, body lotions, and hygiene products—places unique demands on personal care labels. These are products used daily in bathroom environments, where water, hot steam, soap, oil, and friction from users’ hands continuously challenge label durability. A label that peels off after just one week of use not only mars the product’s appearance but also makes consumers question the overall quality of the brand.

Unlike food labels, which prioritize information and compliance, cosmetic labels in the personal care industry place heavy emphasis on aesthetics. Consumers expect shampoo or body wash bottles to look beautiful in the bathroom—a personal space where visual appeal matters. This creates a dual challenge: labels must be both attractive and durable in continuously humid environments.

Challenges from bottle surfaces and product chemicals

The surfaces of bottles and containers in the personal care industry are highly diverse. HDPE and PET bottles have low surface energy, requiring adhesives with high initial tack. Glass bottles feature smooth surfaces but are prone to condensation. Squeeze tubes have curved, flexible surfaces that demand labels with enough pliability to prevent wrinkling when the tube is squeezed by users. In particular, many bottles are coated with a layer of silicone or anti-slip agents—a coating that is the nemesis of conventional adhesives.

Chemically speaking, personal care products contain a wide range of ingredients that can attack labels. Oils and silicones in moisturizers can seep through label edges and break down the adhesive. Surfactants in shampoos and body washes can cause ink to smudge. Alcohol in toners and rose water can dissolve the protective laminate. Therefore, selecting materials for shampoo labels or body wash labels must account for the entire product formulation—not just the bathroom environment.

Material solutions from Hirich for the personal care industry

Hirich proposes three main label structures for this industry. Structure 1: clear film with white ink backing — creating a luxurious no-label look, ideal for premium products, requiring precise white ink printing technology and non-yellowing clear adhesive. Structure 2: glossy white BOPP film with protective lamination — a popular and economical solution for high-volume shampoo and body wash, offering excellent water and scratch resistance. Structure 3: metallic film or silver foil with hot foil stamping — adding a premium accent to professional hair and skin care product lines.

Especially, Hirich places great emphasis on the protective overlaminate layer. The lamination must not only resist scratching and water but also withstand the chemicals present in the product. For products containing oil and alcohol, Hirich utilizes specialized polyester or PP lamination instead of standard BOPP lamination, which is prone to corrosion. All solutions undergo real-world testing in a simulated bathroom environment to ensure that our customers’ personal care labels retain their aesthetic appeal and durability throughout the entire usage period.
