Sustainable labels for cosmetics: beautiful, green, and bathroom-proof
The cosmetics industry is at the forefront of the sustainable packaging revolution. Cosmetic consumers—especially Gen Z and Millennials—not only care about product ingredients but also judge brands by their packaging. A 2023 McKinsey report found that 60% of cosmetic consumers are willing to pay more for products with sustainable packaging. Sustainable labels for cosmetics must simultaneously address three seemingly contradictory requirements: premium aesthetics, certified sustainability, and the ability to withstand bathroom environments characterized by high humidity, frequent water exposure, and occasional shampoo or body wash spills.
Double challenge: beauty and durability in humid environments
Cosmetics is an industry where labels do more than just convey information—they are part of the brand experience. The texture, color, finish (matte, gloss, metallic), and the tactile feel of the label all contribute to the perception of product quality. However, sustainable options often come with aesthetic limitations: recycled paper has a less smooth surface, PCR film offers lower clarity than virgin film, and linerless labels provide fewer choices for premium finishes.
Additionally, the bathroom environment is one of the harshest conditions for labels: humidity levels routinely reach 80–95%, direct water exposure, temperature fluctuations, and sometimes chemicals from the products themselves (alcohol in toners, oils in serums, acids in exfoliants). An uncoated recycled paper label may look very “green” on the shelf, but it will peel, smudge, or grow mold within just a few weeks in the bathroom.
Hirich’s Sustainable Label Solutions for Cosmetics
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. For premium cosmetics, aesthetics take priority: PCR PET film with a matte or glossy coating and wash-off adhesive preserves the film’s premium look while reducing virgin plastic usage. For natural/organic cosmetics, the sustainability message comes first: FSC paper with a thin matte lamination for moisture resistance delivers a natural feel while still standing up to humid environments. For bathroom cosmetics (body wash, shampoo), water-resistant film (BOPP or PET) is a must—no paper option can withstand continuous water exposure, but PCR film and wash-off adhesive can be used to improve the sustainability profile. Hirich advises cosmetics brands on sustainable label selection by conducting real-world testing on the actual product in a simulated bathroom environment, ensuring the label is not only beautiful and green, but also durable throughout the product’s entire life cycle.
