Liner and Label Backing: Small Components, Big Impact on Machine Application

What is label liner and why is it more important than you think?

When it comes to labels, most of the attention goes to the front: the material, colors, adhesive, and coatings. But the label liner—the silicone-coated backing that labels are attached to before use—is what truly determines performance on automatic labeling lines. An unsuitable liner can cause machine jams, label waste, reduced production speed, and even damage to the applicator head.

In industrial production environments, where every second of machine downtime carries a cost, choosing the right liner is an operational decision—not merely a material selection. The liner must ensure labels peel off smoothly at high speeds, without tearing, without static electricity, and without leaving paper fibers on the adhesive surface.

Common Types of Label Liners and Selection Criteria

Glassine liner: This is the most popular liner type thanks to its low cost and good stability under normal conditions. Glassine features a calendered surface for smoothness and is silicon-coated for easy label release. It suits most manual application and medium-speed machine application. However, glassine has drawbacks: it is susceptible to environmental humidity, which can cause expansion and lead to label roll curling during extended storage in high-humidity conditions.

PET liner (liner film polyester): With its high mechanical strength, PET liner is the choice for high-speed labeling lines (over 200 products/minute) and applications requiring absolute label peeling precision. PET liner does not stretch or tear under tension, and withstands heat and humidity better than glassine. Notably, PET liner is a mandatory choice when printing clear-on-clear labels, as the transparent liner enables the labeling machine’s optical sensors to operate with precision.

Special Structure Liners (SCK, CCK, PK): SCK (super-calendered kraft) offers higher thickness than glassine, making it ideal for labels that require stiffness for easy peeling. CCK (clay-coated kraft) features a clay-coated surface for exceptional flatness, suited for thermal transfer printing applications or when high print quality on the liner itself is required. PK (polykraft) is a liner with a plastic film coated onto paper, combining the stiffness of paper with the moisture resistance of plastic.

How does the liner affect machine application speed and waste?

Three parameters of the label liner directly impact machine application performance: thickness, release force, and dimensional stability. An overly thin liner is prone to breakage when the machine applies tension at high speeds, causing machine downtime and material waste. Excessive release force prevents labels from detaching from the liner in time, resulting in peeling errors or misaligned application. Conversely, insufficient release force allows labels to fall off the liner during roll transportation.

The liner’s dimensional stability is also extremely important: if the liner expands due to heat or moisture during storage, the label positions on the roll will shift, causing the labeling machine’s sensor to misread and resulting in positioning errors. This is a common cause of material waste in production that few people think to check at the liner stage.
