Choose label materials by industry: a quick decision guide for buyers

Why choosing label material is a technical decision, not an aesthetic one.

Buyers often approach label material selection from two angles: either by sensory appeal (paper looks natural, film looks glossy and attractive), or by industry habit. Both approaches can lead to suboptimal choices when the actual conditions of product use are not taken into account. A beautiful paper label applied to a shampoo bottle in a humid bathroom will wrinkle and peel within just a few weeks. A clear film label that seems ideal for a perfume bottle will have completely distorted colors without a white ink backing layer, as the color of the liquid inside shows through and alters the appearance.

Material selection must start with the environmental conditions the label will endure throughout the product’s lifecycle, and only then consider aesthetics and budget.

Main label material families and technical specifications

Film BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene): The most popular material in the film family, offering reasonable cost, excellent water resistance, and the ability to withstand humid environments. Available in clear, opaque white, or metallic silver finishes. White BOPP is the standard choice for shampoo bottles, body wash, and laundry detergent. Clear BOPP creates the highly sought-after no-label-look effect, favored in the cosmetics and premium beverage industries. Silver BOPP delivers a metallic appearance at a fraction of the cost of printing on genuine metallic decals.

PET (polyester) film: Superior mechanical durability and heat resistance compared to BOPP. PET withstands temperatures up to 150°C and offers excellent chemical and solvent resistance. It is the ideal choice for pharmaceutical labels requiring sterilization resistance, chemical labels, oil and lubricant labels, and electronics labels demanding high durability. PET is also the primary material for dome labels (3D raised resin-coated labels) thanks to its excellent optical clarity.

PP (polypropylene) and PE (polyethylene) film: PP is more flexible than BOPP, making it ideal for bottles with complex curved surfaces or squeezable bottles. PE is commonly used for labels requiring extreme flexibility, withstanding deformation when the bottle is squeezed without wrinkling.

Specialized materials: tamper-evident decals to prevent unauthorized opening, reflective decals for signage, high heat-resistant decals for automotive components, conductive decals for electronics.

Label Material Selection Guide by Industry and Usage Environment

Food & beverages: white or clear BOPP for water bottles and soft drinks; coated paper for dry bakery and confectionery boxes; thermal paper or film for fresh food weigh-scale labels. Requirements: cold-resistant (if needed), indirect food safety compliance, and excellent barcode scannability.

Dược phẩm: PET hoặc BOPP với keo chuyên dụng, thường cần chịu tiệt trùng, chống giả và serialization. Yêu cầu: độ bền cao, thông tin rõ, chịu được cồn và hóa chất vệ sinh.

Chemicals & lubricants: PET or BOPP with chemical-resistant adhesive. Requirements: resistant to solvents, oils, acids/alkalis, with no blistering or edge lifting even upon direct contact.

Logistics & warehousing: Thermal paper or BOPP/PET film for shipping labels and pallet labels. Requirements: fast printing, abrasion resistance, and outdoor weather resistance during transit.

Hirich supports buyers in selecting label materials by simultaneously evaluating three factors: the actual environmental conditions of the product, brand aesthetic requirements, and target budget—thereby recommending the most optimal material-adhesive-finishing combination for each specific product category.
