Packaging Printing Strategy: Why Start with Product Labels?
When businesses build their packaging strategy, the conventional approach is to start with the box/bottle/pouch structure, then think about the label. But for many brands—especially in cosmetics, food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals—it’s the label itself that serves as the first and most powerful visual touchpoint on the shelf. An effective packaging printing strategy should begin with this question: what does the consumer see first when they pick up the product? In most cases, the answer is the label.
Starting with labels also delivers advantages in cost and speed. Changing a label design only affects the print file and die-cut template—far faster and more affordable than altering the structure of a bottle or box. This matters especially for brands testing the market, launching limited editions, or needing to update information seasonally. Labels are the most flexible component in the entire packaging system, and that very flexibility should sit at the heart of your printing strategy.
Aligning Packaging Strategy with Label Printing Strategy: Questions That Need Answers
A cohesive packaging print strategy is incomplete without labels, and must answer at least five questions: (1) What environment will the product be sold in—supermarkets with bright lighting, convenience stores, or online? Each environment demands a different visual strategy: silver/metallic labels stand out under supermarket lighting, while pastel labels are more refined for online product imagery. (2) How many SKU variants are there? The more SKUs, the greater the cost advantage of digital printing in setup. (3) Does the product require special storage conditions? Refrigeration, freezing, outdoor exposure—each condition requires a different label structure. (4) What is the expected product lifecycle? Short-term products should prioritize digital printing to optimize inventory; long-term, high-volume products should lean toward flexo. (5) Are there traceability or post-purchase interaction requirements? QR codes, RFID, and serialization all need to be integrated into the label design from the outset.
