Why does the price differ for labels of the same size?
When requesting a quote for label printing, many businesses assume the price depends primarily on size and quantity. In reality, two labels of the same size can still vary significantly if they differ in material, adhesive, printing technology, finishing, variable data, or quality control requirements.
Understanding the factors that drive pricing helps businesses compare quotes more accurately, avoiding the mistake of choosing a cheaper option that doesn’t suit their products.
Label Materials
Standard paper decals offer better cost efficiency and are well-suited for dry environments. BOPP film, PET, PP, or specialized materials come at a higher cost but deliver superior durability against water, cold, oil, chemicals, or abrasion. Clear labels, silver labels, heat-resistant labels, and anti-counterfeit labels also require their own specific material specifications.
Quantity and SKU count
Larger quantities typically help optimize unit costs, especially with flexo printing or orders that require dies/printing plates. However, if the total quantity is large but split across many small SKUs, setup costs, file verification, and data management can increase.
Size, shape, and die-cutting
Standard rectangular labels are generally easier to optimize than die-cut labels with custom shapes. Larger sizes naturally require more material. Complex die-cut contours may demand dedicated tooling and tighter tolerance control.
Print Colors and Brand Color Requirements
The number of colors, spot colors, Pantone matching, white ink printing on clear labels, or strict color accuracy requirements across multiple production runs all impact cost. For brands that demand consistent color, be sure to factor in color proofs, archived standard samples, and a robust QC process.
Post-print finishing
Lamination, protective coating, foil stamping, embossing, spot UV, hologram, or tamper-evident features all make labels stand out more—but they also drive up costs. Businesses should select finishing options based on product objectives, not simply for the sake of a flashy effect.
Variable Data
Nếu nhãn có barcode, QR, serial number, mã lô, hạn dùng hoặc coupon biến đổi, quy trình cần xử lý dữ liệu cẩn thận hơn. Chi phí có thể bao gồm setup data, kiểm tra mã, proof và kiểm soát lỗi.
Delivery Time
Rush orders may incur additional costs, as they require prioritizing production schedules, shortening proofing cycles, or splitting deliveries into multiple batches. However, not every request should be expedited—especially when labels involve new materials or demanding technical specifications.
Information required to receive an accurate quote
- Size, shape, and quantity of each sample.
- Desired material or usage environment.
- Print color count and finishing requirements.
- Roll labels or sheet labels, hand-applied or machine-applied.
- Variable data if any.
- Design file or reference sample.
- Required delivery time.
A good quote isn’t just the lowest number. A good quote is a solution tailored to your product, one that reduces production errors and ensures your labels perform their role on shelves, in warehouses, and in your customers’ hands.
