Kraft paper packaging and labels: keep the natural feel without sacrificing performance.
Kraft paper has become the iconic packaging choice for brands aiming to convey messages of naturalness, craftsmanship, and sustainability. From specialty coffee, organic tea, natural cosmetics to artisan foods, kraft paper packaging appears everywhere as a quick visual signal for consumers. However, when it comes to labels on kraft surfaces, things are not as simple as picking a brown paper decal. Kraft surfaces possess distinct physical properties that directly affect label adhesion, print quality, and durability.
Technical Challenges When Labeling on Kraft Paper Surfaces
Kraft paper has a more porous and uneven surface than standard coated paper. This creates three challenges: (1) The adhesive requires a longer dwell time to penetrate the porous surface and reach maximum bond strength, typically 24–48 hours compared to 1–2 hours on smooth surfaces; (2) The uneven surface reduces the actual contact area between the adhesive and the packaging, which can cause labels to peel at the edges after a short period if an unsuitable adhesive is chosen; (3) Printed label colors will visually interact with the brown of the kraft paper underneath, especially if the label has transparent or semi-transparent areas.
Additionally, kraft paper itself can undergo slight dimensional changes in response to environmental humidity (a phenomenon known as hygroscopic expansion). If the label lacks corresponding flexibility, wrinkling or edge lifting may occur when the kraft packaging expands in humid conditions.
Label Solutions for Kraft Paper Packaging: Preserving Aesthetics, Ensuring Performance
There are three main approaches: (1) Use uncoated paper labels, visually matched to kraft for a seamless, direct-print feel. Choose adhesives with high initial tack and short dwell time to compensate for the porous surface. (2) Use kraft paper labels—same color, same material as the packaging—to create an “almost invisible” effect. Challenge: print quality on kraft paper is not as high as on white paper; not suitable for designs with complex colors. (3) Use clear BOPP labels for a no-label look that reveals the packaging’s natural kraft color. Clear labels allow white and vibrant colors to be printed on a transparent base, combining a premium aesthetic with the natural feel of kraft. However, a white ink base layer is required to prevent colors from being distorted by the brown background behind them.
Hirich advises businesses on selecting the optimal label structure for kraft paper packaging based on three factors: brand aesthetic requirements, usage environment conditions (humidity, dryness, temperature), and budget. Each option is tested directly on the customer’s own kraft packaging to confirm adhesion and print quality before mass production.
