Electronic Labels & Technology: Heat Resistance, Serialization, and Component Traceability

Electronic labels: small in size, yet they determine the entire production process.

In the electronics and technology industry, electronic labels may seem like small components, but they play a vital role: identifying parts, tracing origins, managing hardware versions, and supporting product warranties. From printed circuit boards (PCBs) to lithium batteries, from charging adapters to IoT devices, every component needs a label that can survive the harshest operating environments while remaining readable for years to come.

Requirements for electronic labels are completely different from those for consumer labels. First, ultra-small size: many components have only a few square millimeters of surface area for labeling, demanding micro-text printing technology with high resolution. Second, temperature environments: PCBs in reflow soldering processes can reach 260°C, requiring labels to withstand heat without shrinking, burning, or losing information. Third, electrostatic discharge (ESD) resistance to prevent damage to sensitive components during application and use.

Heat-Resistant Materials for Electronic Labels

Polyimide labels are the premier choice for electronics applications, offering exceptional heat resistance up to 300-400°C. Polyimide does not shrink, does not burn, and maintains dimensional stability during wave soldering and reflow soldering processes. This material typically features a distinctive amber-yellow color and is ideal for printing barcodes, QR codes, and serial numbers using thermal transfer technology with heat-resistant resin ribbons.

For lower temperature applications (below 150°C), heat-resistant labels made from polyester (PET) offer a more cost-effective solution while still ensuring durability for adapters, chargers, household appliances, and tech accessories. PET offers advantages in transparency, a smoother surface, and lower cost compared to polyimide, making it ideal for high-volume production.

Serial labels bearing unique identification codes for each product are a mandatory requirement in the electronics industry. Serial numbers not only support warranty services but also serve as a traceability tool for production batches when defects occur, enabling manufacturers to precisely define the scope of a recall rather than having to recall the entire product line. On PCB production lines, small polyimide labels are applied prior to the soldering process, withstanding the full temperature range without any degradation in quality. On finished devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets, serial labels are often sealed inside the device enclosure, requiring decades of durability in environments where temperature and humidity fluctuate with the seasons.

Additionally, the electronics industry also requires ESD-safe labels—labels with anti-static coatings designed to prevent electrostatic discharge that could damage sensitive microchips.
