Wash-off label: a label designed to easily separate from bottles and containers, supporting recycling efforts.

Wash-off label: the label technology that enables clean recycling of bottles and containers

In the PET and glass bottle recycling process, the label is the biggest obstacle. Conventional labels with permanent adhesive cannot be separated from bottles during industrial washing, contaminating the recycled material stream. For PET bottles, residual label residue prevents the recycled material from meeting food-grade standards, forcing it to be downcycled into polyester fiber or construction materials. Wash-off labels completely solve this problem: the adhesive is engineered to release fully from the bottle surface in hot alkaline solution (1–2% NaOH at 65–85°C)—the standard conditions in bottle recycling plants—leaving bottles 100% clean and ready for bottle-to-bottle recycling.

Working Mechanism and Types of Wash-off Adhesives

There are two main mechanisms for wash-off labels: (1) Adhesive dissolves in an alkaline solution—the adhesive layer is completely dissolved, the label separates on its own and floats to the surface of the wash tank, making it easy to collect; (2) Adhesive loses its bond strength at high temperatures—the adhesive remains on the label but completely loses its grip when exposed to hot water, allowing the label to peel off intact. The first type is more common for PET bottles, while the second is typically used for returnable glass bottles, where bottles need to be washed clean and reused multiple times rather than recycled.

Practical Applications and Benefits for Beverage Businesses

Wash-off labels are particularly critical for the beverage industry as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations tighten across Europe and are poised to expand into Asia. A clean recycled PET bottle is worth 2–3 times more than a contaminated one. Additionally, major retailers (Tesco, Carrefour, Walmart) are increasingly requiring suppliers to adopt Design for Recycling packaging, with wash-off labels ranking as a top priority criterion. For beverage exporters, investing in wash-off labels today means preparing for the mandatory requirements of tomorrow.
