Self-adhesive labels: the default choice for modern packaging?

Self-adhesive labels: the default solution, but not always a simple one

When businesses seek modern packaging labeling solutions, self-adhesive labels are almost always the first choice that comes to mind. From cosmetic bottles, food boxes, and zip bags to cartons and logistics pallets, self-adhesive decal labels are everywhere thanks to their convenience and extremely high customizability. But precisely because they are so ubiquitous, many businesses skip the technical analysis step and choose the wrong configuration, leading to material waste and unnecessary downtime on the production line.

A self-adhesive label order requires at least five technical questions to be answered before printing: what surface it will be applied to, what the storage environment is like, whether it will be applied by hand or by machine, what die-cut shape is needed, and what the optimal order quantity is to balance unit cost against inventory waste.

Choose the right adhesive so you won’t have to rework your order midway.

This is where the most material waste occurs. Permanent adhesive suits single-use packaging, but if the product requires label removal for bottle reuse—as in the industrial chemical sector or refill cosmetics—removable adhesive is the right choice. Freezer-grade adhesive is mandatory for frozen food; otherwise, labels will peel off right in the chill cabinet. Chemical-resistant adhesive is required for labels applied to oil bottles and cleaning solvent containers.

Choosing the wrong adhesive means the entire label batch gets rejected, costing you twice: lost printing costs and time spent waiting for re-production. Hirich’s sample approval process requires adhesive testing on the actual packaging surface before mass production, helping to detect compatibility issues early.

Face material: paper or film?

Paper decals are a cost-effective choice for dry, indoor products with a short lifecycle. However, for any product exposed to water, oil, or requiring long-lasting brand durability on the shelf, BOPP or PET film is the superior option. White film delivers excellent print contrast, while clear film creates a premium no-label look—a trend gaining strong momentum in the cosmetics and premium beverage industries.

Common mistake: choosing paper for refrigerated products because it’s cheaper—but the hidden costs from peeling labels, unscannable barcodes, and retailer complaints far outweigh the savings.

Precision die-cutting and roll format: optimized for high-speed machine application

For businesses using automatic labeling machines, labels must be die-cut precisely to the mold, wound in the correct unwind direction, with stable adhesive release and uniform gap spacing between labels. Even a minor deviation in the die-cutting process can cause label jams in the labeling machine, resulting in hours of downtime. Hirich controls die-cutting tolerance at ±0.2mm and conducts trial runs on actual labeling machines before delivery, helping to minimize the risk of production line stoppages.

Optimize Order Quantities to Reduce Waste

Ordering too little drives up unit costs and leaves you short when you need labels in a hurry. Ordering too much results in obsolete label inventory if packaging changes. Hirich recommends optimal order quantities based on SKU consumption rates, printer setup costs, and material shelf life—keeping your business from tying up capital in excess label stock.
